Rodrigo Duterte, presidente delle Filippine dal 2016 al 2022, è salito agli onori delle cronache per la sua “guerra alle droghe”: che, presentata come volontà di intervenire drasticamente su questa piaga, si è in realtà poi tradotta in un aumento di quella che in molti hanno additato come vera e propria violenza di Stato, con uccisioni extragiudiziali – se ne stimano migliaia – di molte persone anche solo sospettate (o accusate ad arte) di essere coinvolte nel narcotraffico. L’11 marzo scorso Duterte è stato arrestato a Manila su mandato della Corte penale internazionale, davanti alla quale è comparso per la prima volta in videoconferenza tre giorni dopo. L’accusa è quella di crimini contro l’umanità per quanto accaduto durante la “guerra alle droghe”.

Duterte, attualmente detenuto nei pressi della Cpi a L’Aia (Paesi Bassi), è tuttora figura estremamente divisiva nel suo Paese: oggi, 28 marzo, nella capitale Manila si è tenuta una manifestazione per chiedere giustizia per le vittime innocenti della “guerra” da lui scatenata.
