È stata interrotta in maniera traumatica in Perù la presidenza di Pedro Castillo, il maestro rurale eletto sorprendentemente, con una coalizione di sinistra, nel luglio 2021 alla massima carica dello stato andino senza poter vantare legami e accordi con le elites del Paese.

A gennaio 2022 aveva disposto la statalizzazione della produzione petrolifera mentre diverse inchieste lo avevano messo sotto tiro assieme a componenti della sua famiglia.

Lo scontro inevitabile con i partiti conservatori, maggioritari nel Congresso, hanno portato il 7 dicembre alla sua rimozione con l’arresto per tentato golpe istituzionale mentre cercava di chiedere asilo politico all’ambasciata del Messico. La situazione del Perù resta tuttavia instabile nonostante la nomina a nuova presidente di Dina Boluarte, finora vice dello stesso Castillo.

La reazione popolare, malgrado la divisione tra i partiti di sinistra, è partita in ritardo ma si sta estendendo in particolare nelle aree andine e povere del Paese, facendo salire il numero  vittime tra i manifestanti.
