Sono 153 i morti legati alla calca creatasi nella notte a Itaewon, a Seul, in occasione di un evento per festeggiare Halloween. Questo è l’ultimo aggiornamento fornito dalle autorità locali, secondo cui le vittime di nazionalità straniera sono 22. Secondo i media locali, sabato sera nelle strette vie di Itaewon c’erano circa 100mila persone. Poco dopo le 10 – non è ancora chiaro per quale motivo – in una via non più larga di 4 metri e in pendenza la pressione della folla ha cominciato a crescere e centinaia di persone sono rimaste schiacciate o calpestate. Non è chiaro, ma la stessa cosa potrebbe essere successa anche in altri vicoli della zona. La maggior parte delle persone morte aveva tra i venti e i trent’anni. Il governo sudcoreano ha deciso sette giorni di lutto nazionale. Il presidente Yoon Suk-yeol ha affermato che questa tragedia “non avrebbe dovuto verificarsi”. Lee Sang-min, ministro dell’Interno, ha spiegato che “un numero considerevole” di polizia e forze di sicurezza era stato inviato ieri sera in un’altra zona della città, Gwanghwamun, dove erano previste manifestazioni e a Itaewon la situazione si riteneva sotto controllo.
