È una delle festività più intense del Sud-est asiatico osservata dagli indiani in particolar modo di etnia tamil. La festività è collegata all’osservanza del culto del dio indù Murugan e ricorda la sua vittoria sulle forze del male. Attraverso le celebrazioni si vuole rendere omaggio al dio in maniera non solo simbolica ma anche fisica, infatti il rituale prevede che oltre a compiere pellegrinaggi, i devoti si carichino sulla testa o sulle spalle delle grandi “icone votive” chiamate kavadi, raffiguranti la divinità. In particolare in Malesia vengono praticati numerosi pearcing rituali alle guance o sulla schiena. Anche se lo spettacolo sembra particolarmente cruento, i devoti vivono questa ritualità come una preparazione spirituale per entrare in contatto con la divinità. (foto Ap)
