Se le centrali della stampa internazionale hanno deciso di non dargli peso, un cono d’ombra si stende sul drama di un Paese come la Repubblica Democratica del Congo, dove come riporta Nigrizia, «Nelle ultime settimane, il 31 dicembre 2017 e il 21 gennaio 2018, ha scatenato le forze dell’ordine contro manifestazioni pacifiche della società civile e del mondo cattolico (non sono state risparmiate le celebrazioni religiose), che gli chiedevano di farsi da parte perché possa aprirsi una fase di transizione che porti al voto entro il 2018 (come previsto dall’accordo di San Silvestro 2016 tra governo e opposizione). Il bilancio è stato di numerosi morti, feriti e arrestati».

Papa Francesco ha lanciato per il 23 febbraio 2018 una giornata di preghiera e digiuno proprio per il Congo e la situazione nel Sud Sudan. Per qualcuno quei volti hanno un nome e una storia. Sono vite da salvare. «Nella Repubblica democratica del Congo 13 milioni di persone rischiano di morire perché non hanno cibo. Ci dice l’Onu che è necessario 1 miliardo di dollari per fare fronte all’emergenza umanitaria nella nazione più ricca dell’Africa quanto a risorse del suolo e del sottosuolo».
