È la prima volta che un patriarca di Mosca dopo la caduta del comunismo si reca in Romania, Paese che vanta la seconda comunità ortodossa del mondo dopo la Russia. Il patriarca Kirill si è espresso a favore del dialogo e del rafforzamento dei legami tra le Chiese ortodosse di Russia e Romania. «Indipendentemente dal corso della storia, noi, i cristiani ortodossi che vivono in Paesi diversi, dobbiamo ricordare i nostri valori comuni», ha affermato Kirill incontrando lo scorso 26 ottobre a Bucarest il patriarca della Chiesa ortodossa romena Daniel.
