Fratel Armin Luistro, finora visitatore del Distretto Lasalliano dell’Asia Orientale, ha subito sottolineato l’importanza di lavorare insieme per mettersi in dialogo con le diverse culture e cercare percorsi nuovi per rispondere alle sfide del mondo di oggi. Lo abbiamo intervistato a poche ore dalla sua elezione.

Fr. Luistro, appena eletto Superiore Generale, le sue prime parole sono state: «Le navi non sono fatte per vivere all’ancora sulla riva; sono state costruite per uscire nella vastità del mare e lì dimostrare quanto sono forti e utili». Quali sono le nuove frontiere e le persone verso le quali vi muoverete?
Il rapporto 2021 dell’UNESCO mette in evidenza l’emergenza educativa globale che stavamo vivendo prima della pandemia, ma che è ulteriormente peggiorata con i bambini che «vivono in povertà educativa… come risultato della chiusura delle scuole e della qualità ed efficacia inconsistenti dell’apprendimento a distanza». Il 46° Capitolo Generale dei Fratelli delle Scuole Cristiane chiama tutte le comunità lasalliane nel mondo a rispondere con audacia, aprendo le porte delle nostre istituzioni verso una maggiore inclusione di coloro che vivono nelle periferie, abbandonando le nostre comfort zones per partecipare alla lotta di coloro che sono ai margini. Le istituzioni lasalliane esistenti devono reimmaginare le proprie politiche e servizi e devono essere istituite nuove comunità e ministeri in aree con gravi povertà educative. Queste aree fragili si trovano nell’Africa subsahariana, ma anche in zone di conflitto come l’Ucraina o il Myanmar, nei ghetti delle economie più ricche del mondo, nelle società in cui alle ragazze non è permesso andare a scuola, o nel vostro stesso quartiere dove i giovani si sentono soli o depressi. Lo Spirito ci chiama a portare loro il messaggio di speranza del Vangelo.

Papa Francesco nel corso dell’udienza ai partecipanti al Capitolo generale, ha ricordato che siete chiamati a «far crescere l’umano secondo Cristo». In una società che spesso è lontana da Dio, in che modo lo state realizzando e lo realizzerete in futuro?
Come il lievito fa lievitare l’impasto, tutti i lasalliani sono invitati dall’Istituto ad aprire i cuori e le istituzioni per incontrare veramente coloro che sono lontani dalla salvezza di Dio. I lasalliani sono chiamati a un cammino di disponibilità radicale verso gli ultimi e coloro che sono smarriti per poterli conoscere e relazionarsi con loro come nostri fratelli e sorelle. Non possiamo predicare o insegnare se non facciamo il primo passo per camminare con loro e ascoltare le loro paure e ansie, le loro speranze e i loro sogni.  Offriremo ad essi la nostra fraternità come un rifugio sicuro in cui possano trovare il meglio di sé e, auspicabilmente, scoprire che non sono poi così lontani dalla compassione di Dio.

Il Papa ha anche parlato dell’emergenza educativa che stiamo vivendo e delle due grandi sfide – la fraternità e la cura della casa comune – che trovano risposta nell’educazione. In che modo il carisma dei Fratelli delle Scuole Cristiane può contribuire a ricostruire l’alleanza educativa con le famiglie, le comunità e le realtà educative?
Il nostro punto di partenza è la nostra lunga tradizione nel lavorare insieme e in associazione con tutti coloro che condividono la convinzione che l’educazione integrale liberi gli esseri umani da tutto ciò che trascina verso il basso: povertà, ingiustizia, aridità spirituale, solitudine, ecc. La nostra identità di Fratelli ci permette di entrare in contatto con il villaggio globale che è disposto e pronto a lavorare in collaborazione per affrontare le crisi educative globali e costruire nuove partnership per poter rispondere in modo più efficace. Lavoreremo con altre congregazioni religiose, ONG, agenzie governative e persone di altre fedi per affrontare questo bisogno urgente.

C’è un progetto educativo a cui lei ha lavorato in questi anni che vuole raccontare e che le sta particolarmente a cuore?
Più di 30 anni fa, ho lavorato con un gruppo di Fratelli appartenenti a diverse congregazioni religiose delle Filippine per fondare il Kuya Center for Street Children. Abbiamo riscoperto la nostra fraternità e abbiamo preso la coraggiosa decisione di raggiungere i bambini di strada della metropoli. È un progetto che continua ancora oggi ed è fonte di grande ispirazione e gioia per me e per i nostri numerosi partner.

C’è una frase di San Giovanni Battista de la Salle che la guiderà in questo servizio che le è stato appena affidato? Quale?
«Dio, che governa tutte le cose con sapienza e dolcezza e che non è solito forzare le inclinazioni degli uomini, volendo coinvolgermi nell’assumere interamente la cura delle scuole, lo fece in modo impercettibile e per un lungo periodo di tempo, in modo che un impegno mi portasse ad un altro senza che io lo avessi previsto all’inizio» (Memoir on the Origins, MSO 6).

Brother Luistro, let’s address the global educational crisis together

The new Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and 28th successor of the founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, comes from the Philippines. Brother Armin Luistro, hitherto a visitor to the Lasallian District of East Asia, immediately underlined the importance of working together to engage in dialogue with different cultures and seek new paths to respond to the challenges of today’s world. We interviewed him a few hours after his election.

Brother Luistro, your first words as soon as you were elected Superior General were: «Ships are not made to live at anchor on the shore; they were built to go out into the vastness of the sea and there prove how strong and useful they are». What are the new frontiers and people you will be moving towards?
UNESCO’s 2021 report highlights the global learning crisis we were experiencing before the pandemic but which has further worsened with children «living in Learning Poverty… as a result of the school closures and the inconsistent quality and effectiveness of remote learning». The 46^th General Chapter of the FSCs calls all Lasallian communities worldwide to respond with audacity by opening the doors of our institutions to greater inclusivity to those who are in the peripheries as well as leaving our own comfort zones to immerse ourselves in the struggles of those in the margins. Existing Lasallian institutions need to reimagine their policies and services, new communities and ministries need to be established in areas with acute learning poverties. These fragile areas are in sub-Saharan Africa, it could be in areas of conflict like Ukraine or Myanmar, in the ghettoes of the world’s richest economies, in societies where girls are not allowed to go to school, or in your own neighborhood where young people are feeling lonely or depressed. The Spirit beckons us to bring the Gospel message of hope to them.

During his audience to the participants of the General Chapter, Pope Francis reminded them that you are called to «make human beings grow according to Christ». In a society that is often far from God, how are you people realising this and will you realise it in the future?
Like yeast that makes the dough rise, all Lasallians are invited by the Institute to open our hearts and institutions so we can truly encounter those who are far from God’s salvation. To the last, the lost and the least, Lasallians are called to a path of radical availability so we can know and relate with them as our brothers and sisters. We cannot preach or teach unless we take the first step of walking with them and listening to their fears and anxieties, hopes and dreams. We will offer our fraternity to them as a safe sanctuary where they can find their best selves and hopefully discover that they are not that far from God’s compassion.

The Pope also spoke of the educational emergency we are experiencing and of the two great challenges – fraternity and care for the common home – which find their answer in education. How can the charism of the Brothers of the Christian Schools contribute to rebuilding the educational alliance with families, communities and educational realities?
Our starting point is our long tradition of working together and by association with all those who share the conviction that integral education liberates human beings from everything that pulls us down-poverty, injustice, spiritual dryness, loneliness, etc. Our identity as Brothers allows us to connect with the global village who are willing and ready to work in collaboration to address the global learning crises and build new partnerships so we could respond more effectively. We will work with other religious congregations, NGOs, government agencies and people from other faiths to address this urgent need.

Is there an educational project that you have worked on over the years that you would like to recount and that is particularly close to your heart?
More than 30 years ago, I worked with a group of Brothers belonging from different religious congregations in the Philippines to establish the Kuya Center for Street Children. We rediscovered our fraternity and made the bold decision to reach out to the street children in the metropolis. It is a project that continues to this day and is a source of great inspiration and joy for me and our many partners.

Is there a sentence of St John Baptist de La Salle that will guide you in this service that you have just been entrusted with? Which one?
«God, who governs all things with wisdom and gentleness and who does not usually force the inclinations of men, wishing to involve me in taking over entirely the care of the schools, did it in an imperceptible manner and over a long period of time so that one commitment led me to another without my having anticipated it in the beginning» (Memoir on the Origins, MSO 6).
