If the urgency of our times is “to rethink thought”, the intellectual legacy of Jurij M. Lotman, the founder and highest expert of the “semiotics school of Moscow-Tartu”, shows itself to be of value today. Fruit of a rigorous and passionate work in  this field, the book published by Laura Gherlone addresses – as the author herself writes – “the last changing of skin that Lotman elaborated from the second half of the Eighties up until 1993, proposing a science of culture ever more open and interdisciplinary. It is about focusing attention, through a convergence of suitable approaches, upon what Lotman himself, beginning in 1984, describes with the term semiosphere. One can only rejoice that twenty years after his death we are presented with a work that provides the key elements to appreciate the contribution of Lotman not only towards a semiotics of culture, but towards an overall recomposition of the human sciences as a whole.

Se l’urgenza del nostro tempo è “ripensare il pensiero”, l’eredità intellettuale di Jurij M. Lotman, il fondatore e lo studioso di maggiore spicco della “scuola semiotica di Mosca-Tartu”, risulta oggi senz’altro preziosa. Il saggio pubblicato da Laura Gherlone, frutto di un rigoroso e appassionato lavoro di ricerca sul campo, si occupa – scrive l’Autrice – de «l’ultimo cambio di pelle che Lotman elaborò dalla seconda metà degli anni Ottanta fino al 1993, proponendo una scienza della cultura sempre più aperta e interdisciplinare. Si tratta di fissare l’attenzione, attraverso una convergenza di adeguati approcci, su quella che Lotman stesso, a partire dal 1984, definisce col termine di “semiosfera”». Non si può che rallegrarsi del fatto che a vent’anni dalla sua morte ci venga offerto un lavoro che presenta le chiavi fondamentali per valorizzare il contributo di Lotman non solo alla semiotica della cultura, ma a una reimpaginazione complessiva delle scienze dell’uomo nel loro insieme.
